Wisconsin wasn’t ready for a game at Ohio State

NCAA Football: Wisconsin at Ohio State

Wisconsin’s self-inflicted damage and Braxton Miller’s lack of rust helped the Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Wisconsin Badgers 31-24.

It was a shock Wisconsin even had a chance to tie the game at the end considering how many mistakes the Badgers made on the night.

Miller completed 17-of-28 passes for 198 yards and four touchdowns while adding another 83 yards on the ground in his first game back from a sprained knee injury.

NFC North gut check: Chicago Bears rule the roost

Chicago Bears nfc north

Through three weeks the NFC North has been up-and-down as a division can get. Coming in to the season, we all thought the NFC would dominate the AFC, but that hasn’t necessarily been the case.

In fact, the NFC North is 2-2 against the opposing conference in large thanks to the Chicago Bears who have defeated their two AFC teams.

Let’s take a closer look in to the division and give you The Sports Bank perspective on where the NFC North currently stands:

#23 Wisconsin football vs. #4 Ohio State: brutally honest preview

wisconsin football vs. ohio state

Wisconsin football and the Ohio State Buckeyes have dominated the Big Ten conference over the past eight years.

The Badgers have mopped up each of the past three conference crowns and Ohio State won the previous five. Each have stood in the way of one another’s goals and in the process created an intriguing rivalry.

This year is no different as the winner of this game projects to be the Leaders Division’s representative in the Big Ten Championship.

How Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon can win the Heisman

Melvin Gordon vs. Purdue

Melvin Gordon might be the most explosive player to ever play in a Wisconsin Badgers uniform.

Just think about that for a second as Wisconsin has recently rostered current NFL Superstars like Joe Thomas, J.J. Watt and Russell Wilson.

If Gordon keeps doing what he’s doing, he will surely make his case and could make a run at college football’s most prestigious award, the Heisman.

Here’s what needs to happen for him to make that run:

Green Bay Packers vs. Cincinnati Bengals: brutally honest preview

jermichael finley vs. redskins

For the third straight week, the Green Bay Packers will face off with a 2012 playoff team.

This time around, it’s the Cincinnati Bengals – coming off a short week – who welcome the Packers to Paul Brown Stadium for the first time since 2005.

Both of these teams were pegged as serious contenders in their respective conference which begs the question; could this be a preview of this year’s Super Bowl?

#24 Wisconsin football vs. Purdue: brutally honest preview

James White vs. Purdue

Each and every year the Wisconsin football team has a game on their schedule where they go up against someone who’s almost a mirror image of them. For the first time in a long time, the Purdue Boilermakers are that team in a schematic sense.

Both the Badgers and Boilermakers run a pro-style offense and have new head coaches preparing for their first ever conference game in the Big Ten.

That’s where the mirror image ends though as Wisconsin is a team loaded with talent and Purdue is struggling through a transition phase.

Aaron Rodgers starts his 2013 MVP campaign in blowout of the Redskins

Aaron Rodgers vs. Redskins

Aaron Rodgers makes it look so easy that it's almost difficult to sit back and realize what he just did on the football field.

It was one of those days against Washington Redskins as Rodgers racked up 480 yards and four touchdowns on a precise 34-of-42 passing in the 38-20 win.

The aerial assault was started in the first half as Rodgers became the first quarterback since week six of 2006 (Tom Brady vs. Titans) to throw for 335 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions in one half.

Five reasons Wisconsin Badgers fans should move on from the ASU fiasco

Joel Stave mad

Almost exactly a year apart, 2012's Fail Mary and 2013's Wisconsin Badgers officiating snafu will haunt the minds of diehard Wisconsin sports fans.

Here's a video of what went down last night if you missed it.

It's difficult to decide which one is worse  because they both contain an extreme incompetence for the game of football and the acting referees assumed no accountability at the time of the call.

We could go on and on about what happened in the desert last night, but let's make a list of exactly why Badgers fans need to look to the future instead of dwelling on things they cannot change.

Jen Bielema takes a twitter shot at the Wisconsin Badgers

Jen Bielema

Talk about kicking a team when it's down.

That's exactly what Jen Bielema, wife of Wisconsin Badgers former Head Coach Bret Bielema, did when she tweeted a shot at Badgers fans following a controversial loss at Arizona State on Saturday Night.

Here's what she had to say after the Badgers seemingly had a game ripped from them because of some ugly Pac-12 officiating.

Arizona State escapes with a win over the Badgers in controversial fashion

Joel Stave kneel down

No one really knows what officially happened at the end of the Wisconsin Badgers controversial 32-30 loss to Arizona State.

It appeared that Badgers quarterback Joel Stave performed a hybrid of kneeling/spiking the ball which confused a questionable set of Pac-12 officials who then went on to botch the entire play completely.

Regardless of whether the Sun Devils deserved the win or not, it was a highly entertaining game in Tempe where we learned a lot about both of these college football teams.

2013 Fantasy Trade #3: We're trading defenses now?

Knowshon says "Don't worry Peyton, I'll score the fantasy points this week"
It's only been one week and we already have a couple of teams shuffling things around. This deal wasn't of the blockbuster magnitude that we saw with the past two trades, but still an exchange I can analyze. Here's how the deal went down between a couple of East Troy confidants:

Jason Szmanda Received:

49ers D/ST
WR Deandre Hopkins

Robert Trader Received:

Packers D/ST
RB Knowshon Moreno

Jason's Perspective: Not really sure why Jason felt like he had to make a deal because he has depth at pretty much every position except running back. He surely upgraded at defense as the 49ers have in my opinion the best unit in the league. This is only speculation, but I'm guessing that he doesn't have a lot of belief in Moreno staying as the Broncos' main back, thus selling him high for maximized value now.

Robert's Perspective: Besides Robert's obsession with Packers players in fantasy, he smartly grabbed Knowshon to compliment Montee Ball on his roster. Robert is more than fine at wide receiver and having a lock on the likely starting RB in Denver is not a bad thing to have. He did have to take a downgrade at defense, but it seems as if it was worth it.

Advantage: Robert because he made his team more complete. He also didn't deplete his team at any position. Meanwhile, Jason has a problem if one of his running backs get hurt and even more concerning, what will he do during his bye weeks?

What did you think of the trade involving a couple of young guys and defensive units? Let me know by commenting below.

#18 Wisconsin football vs. Arizona State: brutally honest preview (2013)

NCAA Football: Texas El Paso at Wisconsin

Wisconsin football takes a huge step forward in the level of competition this weekend with a primetime match-up in the desert with the Pac-12′s Arizona State.

The Sun Devils are 8-0 all-time at home against the Big Ten Conference and Wisconsin is 10-3 in their last 13 night games since the 2009 season.

Something has to give when these two teams play their first competitive game of the season.

Packers let Anquan Boldin and Colin Kaepernick have a party

Colin Kaepernick vs. Pack

Sunday afternoon saw a match-up between two of the better teams in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers coming out victorious 34-28 over the Green Bay Packers.

It wasn’t the legs of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick that caused the demise of the Packers this time around, but rather his arm.

Green Bay’s defense had no answer at any point in the game for San Francisco’s newly acquired Anquan Boldin who hauled in 13 catches for 208 yards and one touchdown on 17 targets.

Wisconsin Badgers Jared Abbrederis is every bit a NFL receiver

Jared Abbrederis vs. UMass

Not many famous people hail from the small town of Wautoma, Wisconsin.

In fact, no sports player has ever gone on to play professionally from the Waushara County town made up of roughly 2,200 people.

Come time for the 2014 NFL Draft and a wide receiver named Jared Abbrederis will make that a false statement.

Abbrederis is the Wisconsin Badgers star wide receiver and has all the tools to join the ranks of the NFL next season.

Melvin Gordon and the Wisconsin Badgers fly past Tennesse Tech 48-0

Melvin Gordon vs. TTU

Wisconsin's three-headed monster reared it's ugly head once again as Melvin Gordon, James White and Corey Clement all eclipsed the century mark for the second straight week in a 48-0 rout of Tennessee Tech.

The offense will receive all the buzz for the seven touchdowns, but it's the Badgers defense that has yet to have a hiccup this season. Soft competition aside, the Badgers recorded back-to-back shutouts to open the season for the first time since 1958.

2013 Fantasy Trade #2: Nick Covets Calvin in a Blockbuster Trade AGAIN

MJD says it's ok, I'm a stud too!
Two years in a row? How did the league commissioner grab the best wide receiver in a trade in consecutive seasons? Let's find out by looking at how the blockbuster trade went down between Isaac and myself:

Nick Grays Received:

WR Calvin Johnson
RB Isaiah Pead

Isaac Lee Received:

RB Maurice Jones-Drew
WR Michael Floyd

Nick's Perspective:

A sometimes wise man (Nick Lowenberg) once told me you can't have a championship fantasy team if you're starting Mike Williams and Michael Floyd as your top receivers. With those words in mind, I went out and not only received a quality receiver, I acquired the best receiver in the game. I was stacked at running back, so giving up one of the good ones was not a problem to make my team more balanced.

Isaac's Perspective:

Little man's fantasy team is ironically named "Who Needs Running Backs," because he's stacked with sleeper candidates. He doesn't necessarily have that stud running back though, so he went out and picked up MJD who's in a contract year. He also picked up Floyd who projects to be a break-out performer now that the Cardinals have a capable quarterback in the desert.

Advantage: I've said it many times before and won't stop now; When you can grab an elite player in a trade without sending an elite player, you win, period. At one time, MJD was elite and very well could prove to be in 2013. However, as of now, I came out ahead in a win-win trade for both teams.

What did you think of the trade involving Megatron and MJD? Let me know by commenting below.

Green Bay Packers vs. San Francisco 49ers: brutally honest preview (2013 season)

Packers vs. 49ers 2013

This year begins a lot like last year did as the Green Bay Packers take on the San Francisco 49ers to kick-off the NFL season. The Packers weren’t so lucky against the 49ers in 2012 with a 0-2 record, including a crushing 45-31 defeat in the divisional round of the playoffs.

San Francisco went on to play in the Super Bowl and made a ton of changes in the off-season to solidfy their team as favorites to make it back to the biggest game in the world. Green Bay would love to put doubt in to their fans with an impressive road win to start the new season.

Wisconsin football vs. Tennessee Tech: brutally honest preview

Wisconsin trio vs. UMass

Progressively better will be the encompassing theme and goal for Wisconsin football in the early part of their schedule.

This week's opponent, Tennessee Tech, is better than UMass and #21 Wisconsin will have their minds set on preparing their selves for a huge showdown in the desert with Arizona State.

The Badgers better not look too far ahead though. FCS-schools notched seven wins against FBS schools this past weekend, highlighted by Eastern Washington knocking off then-ranked #25 Oregon State.
